Why is the protection of rights important in a republic?

In a republic, the rule of law is stricter than the will of the majority. Republics like India protect minorities from majority dominance. The Constitution prevents any branch of government from becoming too powerful and ensures that elected leaders cannot make laws that violate fundamental rights such as equality, freedom of speech, and religion.
