Who Wrote the Rig Veda?

The Rig Veda has no single human author it is considered apaurusheya (of non-human origin) in Hindu tradition, revealed to and "heard" (shruti) by ancient sages called Rishis.

• Oldest of the four Vedas and one of the oldest religious texts in the world
• Composed approximately 1500–1200 BCE (some scholars extend to 1700–1100 BCE)
• Compiled and organized by Veda Vyasa (Krishna Dvaipayana)
• Contains: 10 mandals (books), 1,028 hymns (suktas), and 10,552 verses (mantras)
• Primarily a collection of hymns to deities (Agni, Indra, Varuna, Soma, Mitra)
• Composed by multiple Rishi families including Angirasas, Bhrigus, Vasisthas, and Vishvamitras
• Transmitted orally for centuries before being written down
