The Mughal Empire formally ended when Bahadur Shah Zafar II, the last Mughal emperor, was deposed by the British East India Company following the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
- Bahadur Shah Zafar II was captured after the Rebellion, tried by a British military tribunal, and exiled to Rangoon (Yangon), Burma in 1858, where he died in 1862
