Who Built Nalanda University?

Nalanda University was founded by Kumaragupta I of the Gupta dynasty, in approximately 427 CE (5th century CE).

• Located in present-day Bihar, India (near Rajgir)
• Expanded by later Gupta rulers and patron Harshavardhana (7th century CE)
• At its peak: housed ~10,000 students and 2,000 teachers
• Subjects taught: theology, philosophy, logic, grammar, medicine, mathematics
• Chinese scholar Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) studied and taught here in the 7th century CE
• Destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji in approximately 1193 CE
