Which of the following rational numbers is greater?

(i) 3/4, 1/2

(ii) -3/2,  (-3)/4

(i) We have 3/4 and 1/2

LCM of 4 and 2 = 4

∴ 3/4 = (3 × 1)/(4 × 1) = 3/4

1/2 = (1 × 2)/(2 × 2) = 2/4

Since 3/4 > 2/4

∴ 3/4 > 1/2

(ii) We have -3/2 and -3/4

LCM of 2 and 4 = 4

∴ -3/2 = (-3 × 2)/(2 × 2) = -6/4

-3/4 = (-3 × 1)/(4 × 1) = -3/4

Since -3/4 > -6/4

∴ -3/4 > -3/2
