Tillage, often referred to as ploughing, is the agricultural preparation of soil by mechanical agitation, such as digging, stirring, and overturning. It is an important initial step because it loosens the soil, improving aeration and water penetration, and makes it easier for roots to grow. It also helps in incorporating organic matter and controlling weeds. However, excessive tillage can have drawbacks: it can lead to soil erosion (especially wind and water erosion), destroy soil structure, deplete organic matter, and harm beneficial soil microorganisms. This has led to the development of 'no-till' or 'minimum tillage' practices.
