What is the story behind the Shakti Pithas?

The Shakti Pithas are sacred places believed to mark where parts of the goddess Sati's body fell after Lord Vishnu used his discus to cut her body. These spots became powerful centres of worship of the goddess Shakti, and devotees visit them to seek blessings, protection and spiritual strength.
