What is the function of the vacuole in animal cells?

In animal cells, vacuoles are typically small, numerous, and temporary. Their functions include storage of water, ions, nutrients, and waste products, as well as transporting substances within the cell and isolating harmful materials. They are much less prominent than the large central vacuole in plant cells.
