What is collenchyma? Explain its structure and functions.

Collenchyma is a simple permanent plant tissue that provides mechanical support and flexibility to growing parts of plants. It is mainly found in young stems, leaf stalks, and regions that require both strength and flexibility.

The cells of collenchyma are living, elongated, and have unevenly thickened cell walls. These thick walls contain substances such as cellulose and pectin, which make the tissue strong while allowing the plant parts to bend without breaking. Collenchyma cells usually have very little space between them.

The main function of collenchyma is to provide support, elasticity, and protection to young plant organs. It helps stems and leaves withstand mechanical stress caused by wind and movement. In some cases, collenchyma cells containing chloroplasts may also help in photosynthesis.
