What are minerals?
Minerals are essential nutrients required by the body in small amounts for growth, strength, protection from diseases, and proper functioning of body processes. They are important components of a balanced diet and help maintain overall health.
Different minerals perform different functions in the body. Calcium helps build strong bones and teeth, while iron is needed for the formation of haemoglobin in blood, which helps carry oxygen throughout the body. Iodine supports the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, which helps regulate body activities.
Common sources of minerals include green leafy vegetables, fruits, milk, nuts, pulses, cereals, and other nutritious foods. Eating a variety of foods helps provide the different minerals required by the body.
A deficiency of minerals can lead to health problems. For example, lack of iron can cause anaemia, calcium deficiency can affect bone strength, and iodine deficiency can cause goitre.
Minerals, along with carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, dietary fibre, and water, help maintain a healthy body and support normal growth and development.
