Sunlight is vital for crop growth because it is the primary energy source for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy (food). Ample sunlight promotes vigorous growth, better flowering, and higher fruit/grain production. Insufficient sunlight can lead to stunted growth, reduced yields, and increased susceptibility to diseases. Maize (corn) is an excellent example of a crop that particularly benefits from ample sunlight. It is a C4 plant, highly efficient at photosynthesis in hot, sunny conditions, and requires intense light for high productivity. Other examples include sunflowers and many fruit-bearing plants.
