How did Gopāla become the founder of the Pāla dynasty?

Gopāla was chosen by the people in 750 CE to restore stability in Bengal. He founded the Pāla dynasty. His successor, Dharmapāla, expanded the empire over much of eastern and northern India. The Pālas were great patrons of Mahāyāna Buddhism and established important monasteries and universities.
