Describe how the cytoskeleton contributes to cell division.
During cell division (mitosis and meiosis), the cytoskeleton plays a crucial role. Microtubules form the mitotic spindle, which is responsible for separating chromosomes equally into daughter cells. The spindle fibers attach to kinetochores on chromosomes and pull them apart. Microfilaments (actin filaments) are involved in cytokinesis, forming a contractile ring that pinches the animal cell in two, dividing the cytoplasm. Intermediate filaments help maintain cell shape during these dramatic changes.
