A body of mass 1 kg initially at rest explodes and breaks into three fragments of masses in the ratio 1:1:3. The two pieces of equal mass fly off perpendicular to each other with a speed of 30ms–1 each. What is the velocity of the heavier fragment?
As m1 : m2 : m3 = 1 : 1 : 3
∴ m1 : m2 = 0.2 kg, m3 = 0.6 kg
v1 = v2 = 30 ms–1, v3 = ?

Applying the law of conservation of momentum of the momenta along horizontal direction,
m3v3 = m1v1 cos45° + m2v2 cos45°
0.6v3 = 0.2 × 30 × 0.707 + 0.2 × 30 × 0.707
or v3 = (2×0.2×30×0.707)/0.6=14.14 ms-1
