NCERT Exercise Solutions for Class 6 Science Chapter 1
Since Chapter 1 of Class 6 Science is non-evaluative, it does not contain any end-of-chapter exercise questions. Instead, the chapter includes three activities that help students observe, think and apply the scientific method in daily life. Activity 1.1
Question
Look around your surroundings carefully. Observe different objects, events or natural things and write down any questions that come to your mind.

This activity has no fixed answer because every student observes different things around them. The aim is to develop curiosity and ask meaningful questions about nature and everyday life.
Sample Answer:
While observing my surroundings, I noticed many interesting things. These are some questions that came to my mind:
- Why do birds fly together in groups?
- Why do plants grow towards sunlight?
- Why does the Moon change its shape?
- Why do leaves fall from trees?
- Why do clothes dry faster in the sun?
- Why does a rainbow appear after rain?
You can write any questions based on what you observe around you.
Activity 1.2
Question
Describe a situation from your daily life where someone used the scientific method without knowing it.
Answer
One common example is when a bicycle tyre becomes flat.
Observe: The bicycle tyre is flat.
Ask: Why has the tyre become flat?
Guess (Hypothesis): There may be a puncture in the tyre.
Test (Experiment): Check the tyre carefully or put air in it and listen for leaking air.
Analyse: If air leaks from one place, it means the tyre has a puncture. The puncture can then be repaired.
This shows how people use the scientific method in everyday life to solve simple problems.
Activity 1.3
Question
Think of something you are curious about. Write it as a "Why?" or "How?" question and explain how you can find the answer.
Answer
Question: Why does ice melt faster outside the refrigerator?
Answer:
I think ice melts faster because the temperature outside the refrigerator is higher.
To check this, I can place two equal pieces of ice in different places.
Keep one piece inside the refrigerator.
Keep the other piece on a table at room temperature.
Observe both pieces after some time.
Compare which one melts first.
From this observation, I can understand that ice melts faster in a warmer place because it gets more heat.
This activity teaches us how to ask questions, make a simple guess and test it through observation.
Chapter Overview
The first chapter explains that science begins with curiosity and asking questions. Curiosity is the desire to learn and understand more about the world. It is the reason behind scientific discoveries. Students learn that scientific discoveries happen through a process of observing, making guesses (hypotheses), performing experiments and analyzing the results. The chapter compares science to a giant and unending jigsaw puzzle where every new discovery adds another piece. As we learn more, we ask more questions and discover even more things. Sometimes old answers are replaced by new discoveries, which is why science is always growing and self correcting rather than being a fixed set of facts. It establishes that to be a wise person, you must be a "whys" person and always ask questions about the surrounding world.
Students are introduced to the scientific method through five simple steps: Observe, Ask, Guess, Test and Analyze. The chapter explains that this method is not limited to scientists working in laboratories but can also be used in everyday life. Ask a question about what you observed. Guess an answer, which is called a hypothesis. Test your guess through an experiment. Analyze the result to see whether your guess was right. For example, when a pen stops writing, we observe the problem, guess that the ink has finished, test our guess and analyze the result.
Finally, the chapter explains that science is a continuous journey of learning. It encourages students to remain curious, ask questions, observe and work together to understand the world around them. The chapter includes no assessment exercises and it is non evaluative, so that students experience science as something exciting before the subject content begins.

Chapter 1 is unlike any other chapter in the Class 6 Science CBSE syllabus and preparing for it requires a different approach. Start by reading the chapter thoroughly without memorizing anything.
