Why are minerals important for our body?

Verified Answer

Minerals are important for our body because they help in growth, strengthen bones and teeth, maintain healthy blood, and support the proper functioning of different body systems. Although minerals are needed in small quantities, they play essential roles in keeping the body healthy.

Different minerals have specific functions. Calcium helps develop strong bones and teeth and supports muscle function. Iron is required to make haemoglobin, a substance in blood that carries oxygen to different parts of the body. Iodine helps the thyroid gland produce hormones that regulate important body activities.

Minerals also support immunity, nerve function, and many natural processes that allow the body to work efficiently. Foods such as milk, green leafy vegetables, pulses, nuts, fruits, cereals, and other nutrient-rich foods provide important minerals.

A lack of minerals can cause deficiency diseases and health problems. For example, iron deficiency may cause anaemia, iodine deficiency can cause goitre, and calcium deficiency may lead to weak bones.

Eating a balanced diet with enough minerals and other nutrients helps maintain proper growth, strength, and overall health.
