Lord Irwin (Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax) was the Viceroy of India from 1926 to 1931.
Events during his tenure:
- Simon Commission (1928): All-British commission to review Indian constitutional reform triggered "Simon Go Back" protests as it had no Indian members
- Gandhi-Irwin Pact (5 March 1931): Historic agreement between Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Irwin that halted the Civil Disobedience Movement:
- Release of political prisoners
- Permission to make salt on the coast (relating to the Dandi March of 1930)
- Congress agreed to participate in the Second Round Table Conference
Lord Irwin was considered more conciliatory toward Indian nationalism than many of his predecessors.
