Jyotiba Phule (Jyotirao Govindrao Phule) was a 19th-century Indian social reformer and activist born on 11 April 1827 in Pune, Maharashtra (died 28 November 1890).

Founded the first school for girls in Pune in 1848 one of the first in India where his wife Savitribai Phule became India's first female teacher
Founded a school for untouchables in 1852
Established the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truth-Seeking Society) in 1873 to fight caste oppression
Wrote "Gulamgiri" (1873) (Slavery) a seminal anti-caste text
