Lord Ripon (George Frederick Samuel Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon) was the Viceroy of India from 1880 to 1884 the most liberal and pro-Indian Viceroy in British India's history.
Reforms:
Local Self-Government Resolution (1882): Introduced elected local bodies (town committees and district boards) he is called the "Father of Local Self-Government in India"
Repeal of the Vernacular Press Act (1882): Abolished censorship imposed by Lord Lytton in 1878
First Factory Act (1881): Basic protections for child labor
Ilbert Bill (1883): Attempted to allow Indian judges to try European defendants — diluted after fierce British community opposition
