Where does respiration occur in cells?

Respiration occurs mainly in the mitochondria of cells, which are known as the “powerhouses” of the cell. These organelles are responsible for producing energy in the form of ATP.

The process of respiration is divided into stages. The initial stage, glycolysis, takes place in the cytoplasm, where glucose is partially broken down. The later stages, including the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain, occur inside the mitochondria.

Mitochondria provide the necessary conditions and enzymes required for the complete breakdown of glucose using oxygen.

Thus, while respiration begins in the cytoplasm, most of the energy production takes place in the mitochondria.
