What is the structure of biodiversity governance in India?
The structure of biodiversity governance in India is organized at three levels to ensure effective implementation of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. At the national level, the National Biodiversity Authority is responsible for policy making, regulation of access to biological resources, and international cooperation. At the state level, State Biodiversity Boards are established to manage, conserve, and regulate the use of biological resources within the state. At the local level, Biodiversity Management Committees are formed in local bodies such as panchayats and municipalities to promote conservation, document local biodiversity, and prepare People’s Biodiversity Registers. This multi level structure ensures decentralized governance, community participation, and efficient conservation of biodiversity across the country.
