What is the function of the small intestine?
The small intestine is the main site for digestion and absorption in the human digestive system. Its primary function is to complete the breakdown of food and absorb nutrients into the bloodstream.
It receives partially digested food from the stomach and mixes it with digestive juices from the liver (bile) and pancreas. These juices help in the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
The inner lining of the small intestine contains finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area for efficient absorption of nutrients such as glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
These absorbed nutrients are then transported through the blood to different parts of the body for energy, growth, and repair.
