What is the function of the large intestine?
The large intestine is responsible for absorbing water and salts from the undigested food and forming solid waste for elimination.
After most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine, the remaining undigested material enters the large intestine. Here, water and some salts are absorbed, which helps in maintaining the body’s fluid balance.
The large intestine also contains beneficial bacteria that help in the breakdown of some remaining substances and the production of certain vitamins.
The leftover material is gradually converted into feces, stored in the rectum, and eventually expelled from the body through the anus.
