What is the function of peroxisomes?

Peroxisomes are small, membrane-bound organelles that contain enzymes involved in various metabolic reactions, including the breakdown of fatty acids and amino acids. A key function is to detoxify harmful substances by transferring hydrogen atoms from them to oxygen, producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is then converted to water and oxygen by the enzyme catalase, also present in peroxisomes.
