What is the difference between malnutrition and deficiency disease?
Malnutrition and deficiency diseases are related but not the same. Malnutrition is a broad condition caused by an imbalance in nutrient intake, while a deficiency disease is a specific illness caused by the long-term lack of a particular nutrient.
| Malnutrition | Deficiency Disease |
|---|---|
| Caused by too little, too much, or an imbalanced intake of nutrients. | Caused by the deficiency of a specific nutrient, such as a vitamin or mineral. |
| Includes undernutrition, overnutrition, and nutrient imbalance. | A type of health condition that results from nutrient deficiency. |
| Can affect growth, energy levels, immunity, and overall health. | Produces specific symptoms depending on the missing nutrient. |
| May result from poor diet, illness, or problems with nutrient absorption. | Examples include night blindness (Vitamin A deficiency), scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency), rickets (Vitamin D deficiency), anaemia (iron deficiency), and goitre (iodine deficiency). |
A balanced diet that includes all essential nutrients helps prevent both malnutrition and deficiency diseases.
