What is symbiotic nutrition?
Symbiotic nutrition is a type of heterotrophic nutrition in which two different organisms live together in a close association and both benefit from each other.
In this relationship, each organism provides something useful to the other, such as nutrients, protection, or shelter. This mutual benefit helps both organisms survive and grow.
A common example is the relationship between algae and fungi in lichens. The algae prepare food through photosynthesis, while the fungi provide shelter and protection. Another example is the association between Rhizobium bacteria and leguminous plants, where bacteria fix nitrogen for the plant, and in return receive food and shelter.
Symbiotic nutrition demonstrates how organisms can depend on each other for survival in a mutually beneficial way.
