What is natural immunity?
Natural immunity is the type of immunity that a person possesses naturally without medical treatment or vaccination. It helps protect the body against diseases and harmful microorganisms.
Natural immunity may be present from birth or may develop after recovering from an infection.
Innate immunity is the protection present in the body from birth.
Characteristics:
Non-specific protection
Acts immediately against pathogens
First line of defense
Examples:
Skin preventing entry of germs
Tears and saliva destroying microbes
White blood cells attacking pathogens
This immunity develops after a person gets infected and recovers from a disease.
During infection:
The immune system produces antibodies
Memory cells are formed
Future protection against the same disease improves
Example:
A person recovering from chickenpox often becomes immune to it for life.
Develops without vaccination
Helps the body fight infections naturally
May provide long-term protection
Natural immunity is important because it:
Protects the body from harmful microorganisms
Helps reduce repeated infections
Supports overall immune defense
However, relying only on natural infection can be risky for serious diseases, which is why vaccination is also important.
