What is mindful eating?
Mindful eating is the practice of paying full attention to what, when, why, and how we eat food. It means eating with awareness, making healthy food choices, and understanding the needs of our body instead of eating carelessly.
Mindful eating encourages people to focus on the taste, smell, texture, and quantity of food while eating. It helps us recognize real hunger, avoid overeating, and develop a healthier relationship with food. Simple habits like eating slowly, chewing food properly, avoiding distractions such as television or mobile phones during meals, and choosing nutritious foods are examples of mindful eating.
For growing children, mindful eating supports proper growth, digestion, and overall health because it encourages a balanced intake of important nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, and water.
Practising mindful eating also helps prevent unhealthy eating habits, excessive consumption of junk food, and lifestyle-related health problems. It teaches us that food is not only a source of energy but also an important factor in maintaining a healthy body and active mind.
