Lanthanide contraction is the gradual decrease in the atomic and ionic sizes of lanthanide elements from lanthanum (La) to lutetium (Lu).
This happens because, as the atomic number increases, electrons are added to the 4f orbital. The 4f electrons do not shield the nuclear charge effectively, so the attraction between the nucleus and outer electrons increases. As a result, the size of the atoms decreases slowly across the series.
