What is a taproot system?

A taproot system is a type of root system in which one thick main root grows downward into the soil and smaller side roots grow from it. The main root is called the taproot and helps anchor the plant firmly.

Taproots absorb water and minerals from deeper layers of the soil, allowing plants to access resources that may not be available near the surface. This root structure also provides strong support to the plant.

Plants such as hibiscus, gram (chana), pea, and mustard commonly have taproot systems. These plants usually show reticulate venation in their leaves.

The taproot system is an important feature used to identify and group plants based on their structures and helps explain the diversity found among different plant species.
