What causes anaemia?
Anaemia is commonly caused by an iron deficiency, which reduces the body's ability to produce enough healthy red blood cells or haemoglobin. Haemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, so low levels can affect normal body functions.
Common symptoms include tiredness, weakness, pale skin, dizziness, shortness of breath, and poor concentration. Anaemia can be prevented by eating iron-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, jaggery, meat, and fortified cereals. Consuming Vitamin C-rich foods with iron-rich meals also improves iron absorption.
