What are the types of respiration?
Respiration can be classified into two main types based on the presence or absence of oxygen: aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.
Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen. In this process, glucose is completely broken down into carbon dioxide and water, releasing a large amount of energy. It mainly takes place in the mitochondria of cells.
Anaerobic respiration occurs in the absence of oxygen. In this process, glucose is partially broken down, producing less energy along with by-products such as lactic acid (in muscles) or alcohol and carbon dioxide (in yeast).
These two types of respiration explain how organisms generate energy under different environmental conditions.
