What are the types of decomposition?

Decomposition can occur in different ways depending on the availability of oxygen and the type of microorganisms involved. Broadly, it is classified into two main types:

1. Aerobic decomposition
   This type occurs in the presence of oxygen. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi break down organic matter efficiently, producing:

• Carbon dioxide
• Water
• Heat

It is faster and generally produces less foul smell. Composting is a common example of aerobic decomposition.

1. Anaerobic decomposition
   This takes place in the absence of oxygen, often in waterlogged or sealed environments. Different microorganisms carry out the process, producing:

• Methane
• Carbon dioxide
• Organic acids

This type is slower and often associated with strong odors.

The presence or absence of oxygen determines the speed, byproducts, and environmental impact of decomposition.
