What are the important features of arid soil?
Arid soil is a dry, sandy soil found mainly in desert and semi-desert regions with very low rainfall. It has low moisture content, poor organic matter, and often contains high amounts of soluble salts.
Arid soil is generally light in texture and ranges from red to brown in color. Due to the lack of humus and water, it is usually less fertile than other soil types. The soil has a high salt concentration because intense evaporation leaves salts behind. In deeper layers, a hard calcium-rich layer called kankar may develop, which can restrict water infiltration.
Key features of arid soil:
Low water-holding capacity
Sandy and coarse texture
Poor in humus and organic matter
High salt content
Found in hot and dry desert regions
Quick Fact: Arid soil is commonly found in western Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat in India.
