Moons, or natural satellites, are not all the same. They can be categorized based on how they form and behave in orbit.
One way to classify them is by their origin:
- Regular moons
These form alongside their planet and have stable, nearly circular orbits. Example: Earth’s Moon.
- Irregular moons
These are usually captured objects, such as asteroids, and have tilted or elliptical orbits. Many of Jupiter and Saturn’s smaller moons fall into this category.
Another classification is based on composition:
- Rocky moons - Solid surfaces, similar to terrestrial planets
- Icy moons - Contain large amounts of ice; some may have subsurface oceans (e.g., Europa)
Some moons also show unique activity:
- Volcanically active moons (Io)
- Moons with atmospheres (Titan)
Key idea: Studying different types of moons helps scientists understand planetary formation, gravitational interactions, and the possibility of life beyond Earth.
