What are the different types of epithelial tissues?
The main types of epithelial tissues are squamous, cuboidal, columnar, ciliated, and glandular epithelial tissues. These tissues form protective coverings and linings on body surfaces, organs, and internal cavities.
Squamous epithelium consists of thin, flat cells that allow diffusion and provide protection. It is found in structures such as the alveoli of lungs and blood vessels. Cuboidal epithelium has cube-shaped cells and helps in secretion and absorption, commonly found in kidney tubules and glands.
Columnar epithelium contains tall, pillar-like cells that support absorption and secretion in organs like the intestine. Ciliated epithelium has hair-like projections called cilia that help move substances, such as mucus in the respiratory tract. Glandular epithelium is specialized for producing and releasing substances like enzymes, hormones, and sweat.
Epithelial tissues play an important role in protection, absorption, secretion, and maintaining normal body functions.
