What are plasmodesmata, and what is their role in plant cells?
Plasmodesmata are microscopic channels or pores that traverse the cell walls of adjacent plant cells, connecting their cytoplasm and endoplasmic reticula. Their role is to facilitate intercellular communication and transport of water, nutrients, small molecules, and even some macromolecules (like proteins and RNA) between plant cells, allowing for coordinated cellular activities throughout the plant.
