What are microvilli, and what is their primary function?

Microvilli are microscopic, finger-like projections of the cell membrane that dramatically increase the surface area of the cell. Their primary function is to enhance absorption, particularly in cells lining the small intestine and kidney tubules. The increased surface area allows for more efficient uptake of nutrients and other substances.
