What are biodiversity heritage sites?
Biodiversity heritage sites are areas of ecological, botanical, zoological, or cultural importance that are rich in unique and significant biological resources. These sites are declared under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 to protect and conserve regions that have high biodiversity value, including rare and endemic species, traditional agricultural systems, or culturally important ecosystems. Biodiversity heritage sites are usually identified and managed with the involvement of local communities and Biodiversity Management Committees. Their conservation helps preserve natural heritage, maintain ecological balance, and protect traditional knowledge associated with these areas.
