What are aromatic aldehydes?
Aromatic aldehydes are organic compounds in which an aldehyde group (–CHO) is directly attached to an aromatic ring, such as a benzene ring. They are an important class of compounds studied in organic chemistry because of their unique structure and chemical properties.
The simplest and most common example of an aromatic aldehyde is benzaldehyde (C₆H₅CHO), where the –CHO group is bonded to a benzene ring. Other examples include substituted benzaldehydes containing additional functional groups attached to the aromatic ring.
Aromatic aldehydes take part in various chemical reactions, including oxidation, reduction, and condensation reactions. Compared with aliphatic aldehydes, they are generally less reactive in nucleophilic addition reactions because the aromatic ring affects the electron distribution of the carbonyl group.
These compounds are widely used in making perfumes, dyes, flavouring agents, and different chemical products.
