ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the main energy currency of the cell. It stores and transfers energy for various cellular processes. When the terminal phosphate bond of ATP is hydrolyzed, energy is released, which powers activities like active transport, muscle contraction, synthesis of macromolecules, and nerve impulse transmission. ATP is continuously generated through cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
