Chapter 1 - Locating Places on the Earth 

The first chapter discusses the basic concepts of geography and how locations on Earth are identified. Students learn about the shape of the Earth and the use of globes and maps. The chapter explains important components of maps such as scale, direction and symbols.

It also includes the concept of latitudes and longitudes, including the Equator and Prime Meridian, which form a grid system for locating places accurately on the Earth’s surface. Students learn about hemispheres and how coordinates are used to find exact positions.

Chapter 2 - Oceans and Continents 

This chapter discusses the major landforms and water bodies of the Earth, explaining how the Earth's surface is divided into continents and oceans. Students learn that continents are large continuous landmasses, while oceans are vast bodies of saltwater that cover most of the Earth’s surface.

The chapter describes the seven continents and their relative sizes and characteristics. It also explains the 5 major oceans and their distribution across the globe. Students understand how continents and oceans are unevenly distributed between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and how they influence climate, weather and life on Earth.

Chapter 3 - Landforms and Life

Chapter 3 explains the major landforms of the Earth and how they shape human life. Students learn that the Earth’s surface is not flat and is made up of different physical features such as mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys and deserts. The chapter discusses how these landforms are formed over long periods through tectonic movements and weathering, erosion and deposition.

Students also study the characteristics of major landforms and how they influence climate, vegetation, water availability, settlement patterns and human activities like farming, mining and transport. 

Chapter 4 - Timeline and Sources of History 

This chapter explains how we study and understand the past using different kinds of historical evidence. Students learn about archaeological sources such as inscriptions, coins, monuments, tools and remains of buildings, as well as literary sources like manuscripts, books and ancient writings. The chapter also discusses oral traditions, where stories, songs and memories passed down through generations help preserve history.

Students learn how historians use these sources to reconstruct past events. The chapter explains the concept of chronology and timelines, showing how events are arranged in sequence using dates and periods such as BCE and CE. 

Chapter 5 - India, That Is Bharat 

This chapter explains the idea of India as a country with a long historical and cultural identity and how its name evolved over time. Students learn about ancient references to India in texts such as the Rig Veda, where it is described as the land of the seven rivers (Sapta Sindhu), and later references in texts like the Mahabharata and Puranas where the term Bharata/Bharatvarsha is used. The chapter also discusses how foreign travellers and civilizations referred to India using names derived from the river Sindhu, such as Hind or India.

Students understand how these different names reflect India’s geographical boundaries, cultural continuity and historical connections. The chapter explains how the Constitution of India recognizes both India and Bharat as the country's official name.

Chapter 6 - The Beginnings of Indian Civilisation 

This chapter talks about one of the earliest civilizations of the Indian subcontinent, the Indus Valley Civilization. Students learn about its discovery, extent and major cities such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro. The chapter explains important features of this civilization, including well-planned towns, grid-pattern streets, advanced drainage systems, standardized bricks and water management systems.

Students also study economic life such as agriculture, trade, crafts and use of seals. The chapter also discusses the social and cultural aspects of Harappan life and possible reasons for its decline. 

Chapter 7 - India's Cultural Roots 

Chapter 7 explains the deep cultural foundations of India and how different ideas and traditions shaped Indian civilization over time. Students learn about early Indian thought as found in the Vedic traditions, including ideas like dharma, karma and the pursuit of truth.

The chapter discusses new philosophical movements such as Buddhism and Jainism, and their key teachings like non-violence, compassion and the path to liberation. It also talks about the role of folk and tribal traditions, showing how they contributed to India’s cultural diversity and heritage. 

Chapter 8 - Unity in Diversity, or 'Many in the One' 

This chapter explains how India is a country rich in diversity yet united as one nation. Students learn about the wide variety of languages, religions, cultures, traditions and lifestyles found across India. The chapter shows how people from different regions still share common values, history and national identity.

It discusses examples of cultural unity such as shared festivals, citizenship and mutual respect among communities. Students also understand how diversity strengthens India by encouraging tolerance, cooperation and coexistence. 

Chapter 9 - Family and Community 

This chapter explains how family is the basic unit of society and how it forms the foundation of a community. Students learn about different types of families such as nuclear families and joint families and understand the roles and responsibilities of family members.

The chapter shows how families provide love, care, support and help in developing values like cooperation, respect and sharing. It also explains how families are connected to larger communities where people live together, share resources and depend on each other. Chapter 10 - Grassroots Democracy — Part 1: Governance 

This chapter explains the concept of governance and how societies are organized through rules and decision-making systems. Students learn that governance means the process of making and implementing rules to maintain order in society. The chapter explains the idea of government as the institution responsible for creating laws, enforcing them and ensuring justice.

It explains the three main organs of government which are legislature, executive and judiciary, and their roles in law-making, implementation and justice delivery. Students also learn about the three levels of government in India and how each level handles different responsibilities. The chapter shows the importance of democracy and citizen participation, especially through local self-government systems like Panchayats and municipalities. 

Chapter 11 - Grassroots Democracy — Part 2: Local Government in Rural Areas 

Chapter 11 explains how democracy works at the village level through the Panchayati Raj system, which brings governance closer to people. Students learn that rural local government operates in a three-tier structure, the Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad.

The chapter discusses the role of the Gram Sabha, where all adult villagers participate in decision-making and approve plans and budgets. It also explains the responsibilities of local bodies such as maintaining basic infrastructure, managing water supply, improving sanitation, supporting education and health services and implementing government schemes. 

Chapter 12 - Grassroots Democracy — Part 3: Local Government in Urban Areas 

This chapter explains how towns and cities in India are governed through urban local bodies, which bring democracy to the local level. Students learn that urban areas are divided into wards, and each ward elects representatives who take care of local issues. The chapter describes different types of urban local governments such as Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.

It explains their main responsibilities, including providing basic civic services like water supply, sanitation, roads, street lighting, waste management and public health. Students also learn about important officials like the Mayor, councillors and Municipal Commissioner, and how citizens participate in decision-making.

Chapter 13 - The Value of Work 

This chapter explains the meaning and importance of work in our daily lives and society. Students learn that work can be divided into economic activities, which are done to earn money and non-economic activities, which are done out of love, care, or service without payment.

The chapter discusses that both types of work are important for the functioning of society. It also explains different forms of payment in economic work such as wages, salaries, fees and payment in kind and helps students in understanding the idea of dignity of labour. 

Chapter 14 - Economic Activities Around Us 

The last chapter explains how people in society engage in different types of work to earn their livelihood and how these activities are grouped into three main sectors. Students learn about the primary sector, which involves activities that directly use natural resources.

The secondary sector includes activities where raw materials are processed into finished goods. The tertiary sector consists of services like transportation, banking, education, healthcare and communication that support the other two sectors. The chapter also explains the interdependence of these sectors, showing how goods and services move from production to consumption.
